COMMENTS ON MOST POPULAR TOPICS

Functional Foods

Functional foods was the most popular topic covered in the magazines surveyed. Foods highlighted included pineapple, ginger, almonds and other nuts, soybeans, green tea, tuna and two separate articles on sweet potatoes.

 

Healthy Eating and Lifestyles

Healthy lifestyles was the second most popular topic with articles on the advantages of making small changes incrementally; the importance of maintaining a balanced diet; the benefits of fruit and vegetables, fish, sweet potatoes and soy; strategies to prevent osteoporosis, the contribution of physical activity in prevention of chronic degenerative disease; tips to manage appetite.

 

Overweight/Obesity/Weight Control

Articles and features found on appetite management; the role of dietary fibre and other high volume low energy density foods in weight management and weight loss; advice on reducing carbohydrate intake and the one reference to the contribution that regular physical activity can make in weight management.

 

Supplements

Supplements articles surveyed included features on the role of potassium in regulating blood pressure and advice to maintain adequate intake from foods and supplements; the potential benefits of soybean extracts; general feature on possible bioactive properties of some botanical preparations; advice encouraging use of multivitamin supplements; one article advising caution because of the risks of excess consumption.

 

Fat/Heart Disease/Cholesterol

Articles mainly focused on recognizing health impact of the various fatty acids (saturated vs polyunsaturated and monounsaturated, trans fats); also article advocating mainly plant-based diet and one article with practical tips on achieving low fat diet; plus article outlining role and sources of cholesterol in human nutrition.

 

Caffeine

Mixed group of articles on this topic including one story highlighting evidence that caffeine may be protective against colon cancer, one story suggesting caffeine may negatively impact oral health; one article suggesting that caffeine may accelerate development of osteoporosis.

 

Cancer

Stories on food and cancer highlighted preventive role of fruit and vegetables, and some functional foods including chocolate, and one warning against high salt intake.

 

Infant Feeding

All articles emphasized the benefits of breast feeding, and one article gave advice on selecting the most appropriate infant formula.

 

Hydration/Soft drinks/Fluids

Articles tracked spotlighted sports drinks, tea and soft drinks.
