COMMENTS ON MOST FREQUENTLY REPORTED ISSUES AREAS

Healthy Eating/Lifestyles (25%)

Consistent with interest shown in the daily press, healthy lifestyle coverage in 2005 accounted for a quarter of this year’s coverage. Popular topics include promotion of fruits and vegetables, effect of healthy diet on physical appearance and good health, importance of fluids and general pointers to guard against common food-borne diseases. To read “A Varied Diet for Better Health”, please click here.

Functional Foods (18%)

Always a popular topic, functional foods accounted for 18% of this year’s coverage, though significantly less than 2004’s 28%. Foods to supplement general wellbeing are given some attention, as are traditional favourites like soybeans, oyster mushroom, ginseng, green tea and kimchi. For more information on the health benefits off fruit and vegetables, click on “Health Advice to Eat More Fruit and Vegetables”.

Exercise/Physical Activity & Diet (14%)

This seems like a topic that is gaining interest with the Korean public, with coverage up 11% from 2004’s 3%. Coverage was primarily dedicated to the positive effect of exercise on ‘healthy’ weight loss, with exercise programs like yoga, pilates, dance routines, and derivatives of popular martial arts. Please click here to read more about “Weighing Less – Easier with Exercise? Some Questions and Answers”.

Children’s Diet & Health (12%)

Children’s Diet & Health coverage at 12% of total sample surveyed,  was 2% higher than last year recorded media coverage The importance of breakfast, childhood obesity, prevention measures against bird flu, and the role of a balanced and healthy diet in child development were some of the more prominent topics covered in this category. Please follow the link to read “Kid’s Corner”.

Infant Feeding/Breastfeeding (6%)

Infant feeding coverage dropped 4% from last year’s 10% coverage, with topics including weaning and breastfeeding practices and tips, as well as suggestions on types of foods that are suitable for children of this age. To read more about “Milk Matters for Babies and Toddlers”, click here.

Overweight/Obesity/Weight Control (5%)

This area recorded a similar amount of coverage as last year’s survey, demonstrating that there is still plenty of interest in the topic. Diets, weight loss programs, and childhood obesity were the most common topics discussed. Please click here to view “What You Need to Know about Weight Management”.
