COMMENTS ON MOST FREQUENTLY REPORTED ISSUES AREAS

Zoonotic Diseases & Animal Health (33% for both 2005 and 2004)

The overall coverage of this topic remains unchanged from 2004, recording a total of 33% of total coverage in 2005. A significant amount of this coverage was due to the attention given to Avian Influenza and developments on BSE / Mad Cow Disease. Healthy Eating & Lifestyles (9% 2005, 6% 2004)

Steady increase in this area as noted by the 3% difference between 2005 and 2004. Popular topics of discussion in 2005 include detox and de-stress advice and dietary strategies for coping with time-constrained lifestyles. Food Safety – Microbial (6% 2005, 9% 2004)

2005 sees a drop in coverage in this area by 3%, although articles covered similar content as in previous years, with majority focusing on food poisoning outbreaks in the region. Biotechnology (6% 2005, 8% 2004)

Total biotechnology coverage dropped 2% in 2005, with interest shifting form an international to a more regional focus, and an increasing proportion of media interest being generated from regional events compared to 2004. Overweight / Obesity / Weight Control (6% for both 2005 and2004)

Children’s Diet & Health (5% for both 2005 and 2004)
