editions of 16 English language and 12 Hindi language consumer magazines
that focused on the themes of health, ayurvedic medicine, parenting or
women’s interests and affairs.
Calcium
The importance of
adequate calcium, vitamin D and exercise; weight training; and sunlight
exposure was emphasized for bone health of both women and men. Role of
calcium in weight loss was accentuated. Low fat dairy products were
recommended as the primary source of calcium and figs, spinach and
soybeans were recommended as other sources.

Exercise
Exercise was
recommended for weight loss, calorie burn, stress relief, positive
attitude, disease prevention, strengthening bones / heart / lung, more
stamina, better muscle tone, increasing height and flexibility. Benefits
of aerobic activity, walking, slide training, swimming, total body
circuit workout, yoga and skipping were discussed.

Functional
foods
The medicinal value
of food has gained more prominence in recent years. Benefits of prunes,
guava, bananas, cherries, berries, mango, watermelon, grapes and a range
of other fruit; red wine, fish, ginger, garlic, onion, scallions,
carrots, red chili, coconut, coconut water, turmeric, lemons, peanuts,
almonds, jaggery, tamarind, onion juice, watermelon seeds, lime juice,
fenugreek seeds, whole wheat, bengal gram, olive oil, yogurt, chocolates
and cucumber were discussed.

Healthy
Lifestyle
Abstinence from fast food, sugar & fat-dense foods; eating breakfast;
snacking on healthy food; eating moderately or less than one needs; a
vegetarian diet; and proper handling of food to preserve nutrients;
eating adequate carbohydrate, protein and fat; and eating before sundown
were all recommended for good health. Eating disorders in women (mainly)
and men; food allergy and alcohol intake in men and pregnant women were
highlighted as potential health concerns. Tips to beat the heat,
pimples, constipation and jet lag; avoid food allergies and gain weight
were provided. Adequate iron,
folic acid, calcium, iodine and phyto-estrogen intake was recommended
for women.

Heart
disease
Mediterranean- meals, mini-meals, moderate drinking, weight loss,
exercise, less fat / trans fat / cholesterol / sugar and refined
carbohydrate / meat / dairy products / salt / calories, more oats /
beans / fruit / vegetables / whole grains, niacin supplements, adequate
folic acid / vitamin B12 intake, and more fluids were advised to lower
risk of heart disease.

Overweight
Overweight/obesity has been linked with increased risk of many diseases,
and weight loss was strongly promoted in magazines surveyed. Advise for
weight loss included: visiting a dietitian for a meal-plan; taking a
weight loss pill to control appetite; eating mini-meals; consuming a
low-fat, no-sugar, low-processed, high-fibre low-calorie diet plan;
aerobic activity with weight training; never feeling guilty after
eating; not using food as an escape route; saying no to weight loss
products / fad diets & machines; drinking water before eating; eating
soy foods; eating before 9pm; not eating between meals; eating only till
one is half full; not starving; taking a multi- vitamin & calcium
supplement; using less salt; cooking with olive oil in a non-stick pan;
drinking 5 litres of water daily; and avoiding desserts / fried food.
Weight gain was attributed to diabetes, thyroid problems, depression,
medication, dining alone, darkness and sleep deprivation.
