HOT
TOPICS IN FOOD SAFETY AND NUTRITION NEWS IN
SINGAPORE
For
this month’s review AFIC reviews the content of seventeen consumer magazines on
sale in Singapore during April 2002. Magazines included in the survey were those
focusing on the themes of health, parenting and/or women’s affairs. For full
details contact the AFIC office

Note- these figures are based on simple
counting method of topic headings and does not allow for differences in length
or depth of feature articles.
Functional Foods
This was found to be the most popular topic area
in Singapore during the month surveyed, and is a topic of increasing popularity
throughout the Asia Pacific region. The term ‘functional foods’ is used to
describe foods which contain bioactive ingredients which are not essential
nutrients, but which are thought to offer some health benefits such as
protective against cancer, mood enhancing, energising, anti-ageing. The term ‘
functional foods’ may be new but the concept has a long tradition in Asia where
many foods are believed to have a therapeutic properties, or are selected to
match specific non-nutritional personal needs

Weight management
Overweight and obesity is a growing problem in all
countries of the Asia Pacifc region. The 1998 Singapore National Health Survey
found almost a quarter of the population were overweight, and a further were 6%
were defined as obese. Small wonder this is such a popular topic area !
There is no shortage of advice available on weight
loss, and to a lesser extent prevention of weight gain. However, not all the
advice around is based on scientific evidence that it works, or indeed, is safe.

Supplements
There are a huge range of vitamin, mineral and
extract supplements available on the market. Supplement should not be used as a
substitute for a healthy diet, but almost all individuals at some stage in their
lives will look to boost their daily nutrient or bio-active ingredients intake
from food sources perhaps because of reduced appetite, increased nutrient needs
or desire to improve their sense of health and well-being. The choice of
supplements available is huge, and the 11% coverage of this topic area probably
reflects both the growing consumer interest in dietary supplements, and the wide
range of products available.

Cardiovascular
disease (CVD)
CVD is a primary cause of death and disability in
the region. CVD is characterised by a
narrowing and hardening of arterial blood vessels, which can lead to stroke,
heart disease, heart attack, and loss of circulation in limbs. Established
dietary recommendations for the prevention of CVD include restriction of total
and saturated fat intake, limit cholesterol and sodium consumption, maintain
energy balance and avoid excessive weight gain, adequate consumption of dietary
fibre, fruit and vegetables, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. There is also much
research ongoing into the potential benefits of other dietary modifications such
as increased folic acid, soy-based flavonoids, monounsaturated fatty acids.
