2006 Survey of Consumer Responses to
Front-of-Pack Nutrition Information in China and Malaysia final
report. This report summarises results of four focus group discussions held in
Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur in June 2006. The focus groups examined how consumers
respond to nutrition information on and health claims on packaging, and
consumers’ perceptions of functional foods.

articles tracked in the survey reflect typical lifestyles of the modern busy
world, with dietary advice for travel by air, energy boosters to cope with the
rigours of family life, for coping with multi-tasking. Modern health concerns
were also reflected in articles tracked with articles on type 2 diabetes, weight
management, the risks of extreme diets and optimal nutrition in pregnancy. For

Features targeted
both young parents with advice on encouraging healthy eating habits and good
nutrition in early life and parents of older children with more specific
medical/health concerns such as diabetes and anorexia. With so much information
and advice for parents around nowadays, it can be difficult for parents to

Topics tracked in
this year’s survey included, the benefits of foods rich in wholegrains, omega-3
fatty acids, and antioxidants (mainly highlighting fruit and vegetables, but
also a feature on coffee as a source of ingredients was tracked). Also foods to
reduce symptoms of the menopause and improve sleep and drinks containing
potentially beneficial bioactive ingredients for the modern woman were also

Feeding & Breastfeeding

Most articles
concentrated on the multiple benefits of breastfeeding, and advice to ensure

Softdrinks/Fluids/Hydration
(7% total of tracked coverage)
An eclectic mix
of topics were tracked and reflect a growing interest in beverage choices and
their potential impact on health. Topics noted in this year’s survey included
fluids to support immunity from disease, maximising the benefits of water,
preliminary scientific evidence for both beneficial and adverse health effects
