Do consumers know
how much they should be eating? Do they know the energy content
of the foods they eat? Do consumers read the nutrition
information on label, do they understand what it means, and do
they use it when choosing foods? These questions were debated at
the First World Congress of Public Health Nutrition, moderated
by Dr. E. Tee Siong, President of the Nutrition Society of
Malaysia and Dr. Jonathan Back, Strategy and Analysis Unit, DG
SANCO, European Commission, Brussels. It is available here as a

Georgina
Cairns, Asian Food Information Centre (AFIC)
provides an Asian perspective on the issue of consumer
attitudes to nutrition information on food labels and
packaging.

After graduating in nutrition and dietetics, Georgina
worked as a research dietician on two dietary
intervention research projects for the Epidemiology Unit
of the Medical Research Council of Great Britain. This
was followed by a number of years as a director of a
horticultural business with extensive involvement in
marketing and communications for the associated trade
sector, and an MBA, with specialist electives in
communications and social marketing.
Following communications research, development and
management positions in tobacco control, and a health
promotion foundation, Georgina moved to Bangkok
Thailand. She was appointed as Executive Director of
AFIC in 2001. |

Dr.
Josephine Wills, European Food Information Council
(EUFIC)
provides insights about understanding the European
consumers? views on nutrition information on labels. In
the course of her discussions, Jo refers to research
conducted by EUFIC which can be found
here.
Having qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in
London in 1981, Jo spent several years in veterinary
practice and earned her PhD from the University of
Bristol Veterinary School, in 1986.
After several years postdoctoral research at the
University of Manchester Medical School, she joined the
company Masterfoods, where she worked in science,
communication, and regulatory roles for 18 years,
latterly as European Head of Scientific and Regulatory
Affairs for all product categories.
In January 2006, Jo was appointed to Director General of
the European Food Information Council, based in
Brussels.
Jo has published over 80 scientific papers, edited four
books and lectured extensively worldwide. |

Schmidt, International Food Information Council (IFIC)
outlines the US consumer?s perception and use of
nutrition and health information on food labels. During
this discussion forum, Dave makes reference to research
conducted by IFIC which can be found
here.
David Schmidt is the president & CEO of the
International Food Information Council in Washington,
DC. He is also CEO of the IFIC Foundation. During his
thirteen year tenure at IFIC, Schmidt has been a
frequent speaker on a wide range of food safety and
nutrition issues, in the USA and internationally.
Prior to joining IFIC in 1993, Dave served as the first
Bush Administration?s director of external affairs for
the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture. In 1998, Dave was named as an
adjunct fellow with the Georgetown Center for Food and
Nutrition Policy in Washington, DC. David also serves on
the National Advisory Board for the Center for Risk
Communication Research at the University of Maryland and
participated on the steering committee on Reinventing
Agricultural Education for the Year 2020.
Dave holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in business
administration from Vanderbilt University, Nashville,
Tennessee and has completed graduate business studies at
the University of New Orleans |

Francy
Pillo-Blocka, Canadian Council of Food and Nutrition
(CCFN)
explains Canada?s sixth edition of the Tracking
Nutrition Trends survey and the perspectives gleaned
from this periodic Canadian initiative. A copy of this

Francy is President and CEO of the Canadian Council of
Food and Nutrition. She completed a dietetic internship
at the Hospital for Sick Children in 1987 after
graduating from the University of Waterloo with a
Bachelor of Science degree in 1983 then earned a
nutrition degree from Ryerson University in 1986.
Francy worked as a clinical dietitian at the Hospital
for Sick Children for 10 years in many of the program
areas doing clinical care and practice-based research.
She spent 6 years in corporate development. Of note, she
restructured the Specialty Food Shop business and
established partnerships resulting in tripling top line
and bottom lines sales. She has earned a number of
awards for various communication efforts.
Francy was hired at the Canadian Council of Food in
Nutrition in November, 2004 based in the greater Toronto
