稻米基因定序完成

研究人员排定出整株稻子的基因序列图,而完成了国际稻米基因定序计画 (IRGSP),此举将是改良稻米品质及产量的重大关键。稻米是第一样基因被定序的农作物品种。这是一件重大事件,因为稻米和其它世界主要粮食,例如玉米、麦子、黑麦和大麦拥有相同的基因。

"自然"杂志8月出刊的一篇论文中,详细记载了稻米基因序列,这将对全球一半人口最重要的食物来源造成重大冲击。整个基因序列存放在国家卫生研究院的基因银行,公诸于世,而可供全球研究人员自由使用。

以动物食品来改善营养不良儿童的饮食质量 

2005年美国科学协会年会中,肉和牛奶在补充营养不良幼儿饮食里占了一个重要的角色。美国农业研究服务的主任描述了在肯亚农村的一个2 年研究中,观察对于几百个小学生接受肉、牛奶或从蔬菜油中获得的等量热量后的变化。 

在所有三个小组中的孩子,不论他们是否接受了肉、牛奶或油类,都比没有接受补充的同学增加了大约400 克的重量,他们的上胳膊肌肉也有增加。同时这些接受肉类补充的孩子在解决问题的能力和智力测试方面,还有他们的微量营养素的状态在干扰计画以后,也有明显的增加。这些结果与在肯亚、埃及和墨西哥的其它研究是一致的,这也许对于大部分亚洲孩子的饮食中有足够热量但却微量营养素不足的情况有很大的影响。
