The Science behind the Headlines
December 11, 2009
This headline appeared in the Indian Express on December 6. This week, instead of examining the science behind this article, the article itself is featured because of the message that it conveys on the need for moderation and the perils of taking any approach to dieting to the extreme. AFIC has always maintained that balance and moderation in diets is a more healthy approach over the long term than radical changes in diet based on the latest scare story. AFIC’s tips on a varied diet can be found at http://www.afic.org/healthytips.php?news_id=227&start=0&category_id=26&parent_id=26&arcyear=&arcmonth=
The subject article describes a pathological neurosis that was recognized in 1997 as orthorexia nervosa. Unlike other eating disorders that are characterized by an obsession over food quantity, orthorexia nervosa is characterized by an obsession over food quality. Given the constant publication of warnings over one food ingredient or another, sufferers from this condition end up trying to avoid almost everything, sometimes with severe health consequences.
Please read the article at http://www.indianexpress.com/news/when-eating-right-goes-wrong/549992/1 for a more complete description of this condition. It is a disturbing sign of our times.
